Getting your drains ready for the summer months

It’s fantastic to know that over the next few weeks we are going to experience, clear blue skies and the sunshine… it’s a time of year that we all love. And it’s a bit different from the cold weather and rain we are used to here in the UK. One thing you may not have considered this summer is a drainage problem occurring and scuppering all of your plans.

Unfortunately, little do most people know summer can be the most problematic time of year. It can cause problems with the overall functionality. Trees and plants continue to grow and bloom and as they flourish the leaves can begin to fall and tree roots can lead to nasty blockages. If you find that your drains have a tree root growing in them then you could be left with an unpleasant smell surrounding your property.

As soon as you notice a blockage or see that something isn’t quite right, you need to get it sorted as soon as possible as it may become worse and you could be left with an even bigger problem. We understand that you will be looking forward to having your friends and family around to enjoy the sunshine, but they won’t enjoy it if there is an unpleasant odour.

How will you know there is a problem with your drains?

The first and most common sign of a blockage or problem in your drainage system will be slow flowing drains. Water may rise when you run the tap or flush the toilet. If it is left and not dealt with and the pressure builds in the pipes, you could end up with a burst pipe. As soon as a pipe bursts you have a major incident to deal with.

Your premises won’t be left very clean, there will be an unpleasant smell and there is more working going to be needed to repair the drain and also clean up.

Turn off the main water supply to help prevent blockages

During the summer we would expect many customers to be going away on holiday and making the most of family time. If you are away for a long period of time, it could be beneficial to you by turning off the main water supply. It will not only stop there from being water sat in your drains, but it will reduce the risk of flooding too. This will save you the expense of having to clear up when you get back if there were a flood or the worse were to happen.

Check your drains on a regular basis

You shouldn’t be waiting until you have a drainage problem before you check your drains. It should be part of your property maintenance routine and carried out on a regular basis. If the problem is spotted early it is going to cost you less money to fix it. You can act on preventing the issues and stop them from becoming worse.
